07-18-2025 — Visitors
Howdy all. The last few days were supposed to be nice rainy days to keep the garden growing. Didn’t happen. All the rains were south or north of here. Just a little drizzle a few times. A rather nice “fall” day today. Temps starting in mid 60s and going to low 70s before falling back to 60s again overnight. Radar shows rain to the south again. I need to get out and harvest potatoes and cucumbers. May even be some mini tomatoes out there. We will see. I’ll try to update later.
But this entry is about some visitors this morning.
Three bunnies were out playing around in the garden outside the garage. Looks like they were having fun.
And this squirrel was out front around the same time being suspicious of this little gnome stature. Cute.
They are just trying to Enjoy Life.
Back with the afternoon update on the garden. Well, barely afternoon — like 12:20. Anyway, went out to harvest a few things and found a couple surprises.
The cucumbers are trying to escape, and failing. There were 3 of them like this. Had to pull off the end, and then pick the rest.
I’m guessing it started when it was only ¼ inch diameter, and was partially through the gap and just grew on both sides.
That container has about a dozen cucumbers in it. Just 6 days ago, I gave my brother 6-7 cucumbers, and the 3 plants still have a couple dozen fruit that range in size from tiny, to ready to pick. And many, many blossoms. I’m glad I stuck to just 3 plants!
These 50 taters were from the 2nd half of the bed back by the fence. I sort of messed up back there. I had put 2 water reservoirs in that bed to keep it from drying out. Well, that left only 3 inches of soil on top. Didn’t notice when I planted the seed potatoes. I’ll be adding another 4-6 inches of potting mix this year, so next year it can do better with root crops. Maybe I’ll do the onions in there with some garlic and radishes. But that’s far off in the future for now.
Also harvested a pint of mixed colored beans and a dozen or so small cherry tomatoes / small purple something tomatoes (early girl?).
Most of the plants, like the beans and tomatoes, really don’t look that great this year. I’m surprised I’ve gotten any beans. And the pepper plants don’t seem to want to grow at all. I probably could harvest a lot of carrots, but don’t want any today.
I will likely harvest the rest of the potatoes soon, just to get them out of the ground. Their plants are pretty much gone. And I suspect the cherry tomato plants will soon be burying me in them.
Oh, the melon plants are still alive and have a couple blossoms. But they really don’t look too healthy.
I have been spending some more time trying to organize my 3D printer supplies to be ready for fall/winter play time. With the Amazon “Prime” day sales, I picked up more spools of filament than I have room to store. I’m trying again to work with the space under that one work table that holds the X1C printer. I tried these fabric covered “humidity reducing” boxes that I thought I could move around under there to reach various filaments. But they just would not move well, and the boxes made it impossible to get a roll out.
So I’m now trying to set up a new shelf in the table, a couple inches off the floor, that will be solid and allow casters to roll on it. I purchased these small filament stands that can hold 10-12 rolls each. I think I can have 4 of them on that shelf, and they will roll out of the way of each other so I can get to all 40 rolls of filament at any time. Well, that’s the plan. I hope it works so I can play “maker” easier and Enjoy Life
